The "Living Mulch" That Never Needs Replacing

This is one of the go-to problem solvers here at Mitchell's for one major reason: Erosion Control. If you have a bank, a slope, or an awkward patch of yard where the rain washes the dirt away, this plant ca your best friend.

Unlike the stiff, prickly junipers of the past, 'Blue Pacific' has a softer, feathery texture and stays incredibly low to the ground. It spreads out to form a dense, lush mat that acts like a rug for your landscape. It literally hugs the terrain.

In the Mount Airy, King, and Winston-Salem area, this is the perfect "fixer" plant. It thrives in the hot sun that burns up other groundcovers, and once it's established, it locks the soil in place so you can stop worrying about washout.

Why we recommend them for NC Piedmont Triad yards:

  • Cool Color: As the name suggests, the foliage has a distinctive blue-green hue that looks refreshing in the summer and deepens nicely in the winter. It pops against our local stone and brick.

  • The "Waterfall" Effect: Because it stays low and spreads wide, it looks absolutely stunning trailing over the edge of a retaining wall or rockery. It softens those hard edges instantly.

  • Tough as Nails: This variety is incredibly heat and drought-tolerant once established. It’s actually salt-tolerant too (it’s often used at the coast), so it handles roadside planting where salt spray might be an issue in winter.

  • Weed Suppressor: It grows dense enough to choke out most weeds, meaning less weeding for you and more time enjoying your yard.

Best Used For: Stabilizing steep banks, cascading over retaining walls, rock gardens, and acting as a groundcover in large, sunny areas.

Planting & Care

The Blue Pacific Juniper is a vigorous grower, staying very low (about 12 inches tall) but spreading wide (6–8 feet). It needs full sun to stay thick and lush.

While it is tough, it does have one rule: it hates "wet feet." It needs well-draining soil. If you have heavy clay, planting it on a slope or in a raised bed usually provides the drainage it needs to thrive.
